Some notes on the nomination process:
Acting - I have zero capacity for judging acting talent. I would guess I've seen roughly 10 performances in my entire life that I didn't think were utterly convincing. So instead actors are rated solely on looks and charm. Almost every nominee for Best Actress was chosen based entirely on my finding them attractive. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has three nominations not because all her performances were especially amazing (though they could have been, I have no idea), but because she's hella cute and I just happened to see her in three different '06 movies. The Best Actor nominations are basically the same thing, they were all either charming or cute or funny or badass or otherwise somehow amazing that probably had little to do with "talent". The biggest surprise of the year is Clive Owen, who somehow managed to get nominated twice even though he's ugly (like, really fucking ugly). Even with that gross face, I'm forced to admit that he is charming as fuck, and Children of Men wouldn't have been half as good without him.
Movies I haven't seen yet - There are a couple nominees I threw in there even though I haven't seen the movies yet. The first is Mark Wahlberg for Best Actor in The Departed. Mark Wahlberg is a fucking amazing actor, and I don't have to see the movie to know he's gonna fucking blow me away when I finally do. The other is The Wicker Man for Best Remake. I didn't see this in the theaters because I didn't hear much good about it. But after watching this collection of clips, I don't see how it is even remotely fucking possible that the movie itself is not mind-blowingly fucking awesome.
The Mel Brooks Awards - After the poll for the Best of the year, I posted another poll for the worst of the year. All the nominees for Worst Picture were already included in my list of The Worst Films I Saw in 2006. The Worst Actor & Actress Awards work essentially the same way as the Best. They're not nominated because they're not believable or whatever, but because they are the opposite of charming. I cheated a bit in that I haven't actually seen The Devil Wears Prada, but I saw that trailer/clip from the movie more than enough times, and every time Meryl Streep would say "No no, wasn't a question." I wanted to shoot myself.
So yeah, sorry for that tremendously long introduction. Here are the nominees for THE 2007
